That's right, a book by Ann Reed.
Earl Johansen and Nearly Kelly have been friends since they were boys in Campbell, Iowa. Now old men, Nearly lives in the Veterans Home, where Earl is his frequent visitor and steadfast companion. As his health deteriorates and they reminiscence about days gone by, Nearly has only one regret — something Earl and a couple of new friends might help him resolve.
Citizens of Campbell is the story of a small Iowa town, the unlikely but enduring friendship between two World War II veterans, and the timeless gifts of living a simple life.

NEW SONG: Not Goin’ Out There
Not Goin’ Out There
Words and music: Ann Reed
Long ago when I was four
My jacket’s on I’m out the door
‘Round the corner I can’t see
A German Shepherd’s meeting me
Nose to nose, eye to eye
I turn around inside I go
My dad has seen it all unfold
What’s the matter? S’what he said
I point and shake my little head:
And say: I’m not goin’ out there (3X)
’Til the big dog’s gone
Summer sings a noisy tune
July the fourth begins in June
Down the street out on their lawn
They’re setting off their little bombs
Parks ablaze, in alley ways
Cannot find my faithful cat
He’s terrified oh I get that
Peeking from his hiding place
Underneath the bed afraid:
He says: I’m not goin’ out there (3X)
‘Til the big noise stops
Oh, scary outside (2X)
Nowadays, too extreme
Wishing but it’s not a dream
Look for kindness, love, and care
Search for beauty ev’rywhere
High and low, ‘cause it feeds the soul
A mighty risk, I contemplate
How do I live and celebrate?
I tell myself I can be brave
But there’s a voice I hear it’s say:
I’m not goin’ out there (3X)
’Til the crazy calms down
